Trend-spotting: Playing with Proportions

I don't know if this is a trend as much as it is a styling trick, but plays of proportion were all over the Fall runways, namely big coats/jackets/sweaters layered over sleek dresses and pants. It's a little unexpected, and an easy way to look casually glamorous.

Emanuel Ungaro, Givenchy, Kenzo:

Diane von Fursternberg, Phillip Lim, Missoni:

Bottega Veneta, Emilio Pucci, Dsquared:

You can probably tell that this is a really versatile trend. Little leather jackets ground floaty goddess dresses (Dsquared) and slight over-sized leather jackets can downplay the sexiness of body-con mini dresses (Ungaro). Big, furry or feathery jackets add a dose of rocker chic and glamour to slim pants, gowns, and cocktail dresses (Pucci, Phillip Lim, Bottega Veneta, Givenchy). Slouchy sweaters or outdoorsy coats are unexpected with little cocktail or sweater dresses (Missoni, Kenzo, DVF), and make them completely daytime appropriate. Since this is a neat styling trick, it's something you can not only start wearing now, but shop your closet for.
