Since the '80s stormed the Fall runways, it figures that big shoulders are officially back. It's been brewing for a few seasons now (mainly thanks to Balmain), but this time it's official.
Louis Vuitton, Louis Vuitton, Chanel
Balmain, Balmain, Hussein Chalayan
I know when you think big shoulders the first thing that comes to mind is giant shoulder pads in ugly polyester blazers (maybe that's just me), but it doesn't have to be like that! Big shoulders can be subtle, like the sharp shouldered jackets at Chanel and Hussein Chalayan, or rounded and romantic like at Louis Vuitton. If you want a really dramatic look, try the angled shoulders at Balmain (or the rounded shoulders on their military jackets from last season), which I love. It doesn't look '80s at all--it's almost futuristic, and very rock and roll cool. Plus, putting an emphasis on the shoulders can balance wide hips and make them ( and your waist) look smaller in comparison, which is always a good thing.
