Black, Black, Black, and More Black

In an effort to fund my ridiculous shopping habits during the school year, I've gotten myself two jobs this summer, one of which is hostessing at a restaurant.  Which sounds much easier than it is, believe me, and so is wearing all black every day.  If it was all black, fashion-forward and casual, I would have it totally covered.  But all black and office appropriate?  Not so much.  So far, I've resorted to stealing my mother's clothing, but I need to pull in a few more black basics to keep from wearing the same thing every day.

Splendid Jersey Wrap Dress, $140 at net-a-porter.com, J. Crew Featherweight Cotton Bling-Button Cardigan, $62 at jcrew.com: My mom actually has a black BCBG wrap dress just like this that I wore today.  I put a little black cami underneath it (normally I'd recommend a pop of color there, but all black means all black).  I like wrap dresses for this because they're flattering, but not too fitted, easy to move it, but also pulled together.  If it's cold inside, I'd throw on a little black cardigan.  This one has adorable bling-buttons that give it a little extra sparkle and attitude.

Both J. Crew: Solid 3/4 Sleeve Stretch Shirt, $48 at jcrew.com, Premium Stretch Bistro Pant, $88 at jcrew.com: Technically, I'm supposed to be wearing pants every day, but I literally own no pants that aren't jeans.  I'm not exaggerating.  All jeans.  I think I really do need to be a big girl and buy a pair of real person pants.  I like these J. Crew pants because they have a flattering, not too sexy but not frumpy cut with a nice bit of stretch, and I could get a ton of wear out of them.  For work, I'd top those pants off with a fitted little black button-up, preferably with 3/4 length sleeves.  I feel like when you have a bit of a chest, long-sleeved button ups (with the sleeves down) can add extra weight to your frame, which is not a plus.

Many Moons Chemise, $58 at anthropologie.com, Lynx & Leo Dress, $138 at anthropologie.com: I know this Anthropologie pieces is a chemise, and it's a lovely one, but you could totally wear it as a dress convincingly.  The woven detailing at the bust is so precious.  I don't want to give any scandalous suggestions (ahem) but if you happened to wear this to sleep in a place that wasn't (ahem) your house, you could definitely throw on a menswearish belt the next morning and look like you'd totally planned that outfit.  Just theoretically.   I adore the bra-cup detailing on this white sundress.  It adds a lot of edge to all that white and eyelet, and the fit-and-flare shape is both sweetly retro and very flattering.

Urban Outfitters Sun Jar, $45 at urbanoutfitters.com, Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, $29 for 4 oz. at sephora.com: This is totally random, but how adorable is this UO sun jar?  You leave it out in the sun all day, it absorbs the light, and then it glows all night in your room and looks like a little Mason jar filled with purple, blue, orange, or whatever color light.  It's like a very chic, grown-up and eco-friendly night light.  Even more randomly, I'm intrigued by this UD setting spray.  It has great reviews on Sephora.com, and it certainly sounds like a good idea.  Just spray it one after your makeup is applied, and it doesn't budge all day.  It's like the reverse of primer!

  1. Real person pants are a must! Are you near a JCrew outlet? I get all my adult pants there on the cheap! Once, I got a pair of $80 pants for $15, spent another $10 tailoring them to fit right. It's perfect!

  2. Hahaha I know right? I'm not near a J. Crew outlet :( unfortunately. That's such a great deal! Nice work. I went in today to check out the pants situation and they had literally ZERO pairs of black pants. Noooo!
