FYI and Freeman's Pineapple Enzyme Mask

This is the calm before the storm, people. I leave for school next Sunday and basically have no computer/orientation for the following week. I'm going to try to stock up on some posts this weekend and next week, but if you don't see a post from me for a day or two, it's not because I don't love you anymore. It's because I collapsed from lack of sleep. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but you get the point.

camilla and marc Lotus Dress, $552 at shopbop.com, C & C California Neon Peace Tank, $58 at shopbop.com, Pelle Moda Jaron Platform Sandals, $170 at shopbop.com: This is such a me dress. There's something about that bad-ass ballerina look, with a fitted, corsety bodice and a pouffy, a-line skirt that just gets to me--it's the perfect mix of sweet and sassy. Plus, from the front it's a chic (if short) LBD, but there's a flashy gold zipper up the back that adds just a touch of edge. And it's a little Erin Fetherston, no? Yes, I'm the kind of cheeseball nerd that would so wear an oversized peace sign tank. The cut of the tank is a bit sport hipster, and the peace sign adds a sweet, hippietastic touch. No, it's not that versatile, but it would look adorable with shorts or jeans, and it's less than $60. Pelle Moda is seriously scoring with their heels. They've got $600 style for less than a third of the price. This is the kind of shoe I'd hate in black, but in light gray it's just the kind of bootie/sandal hybrid that I'd go for. There's a perfect balance between the criss-crossing straps and the heavier vamp and heel, and the slight texture variation in the platform and heel is so chic.


Freeman Pineapple Enzyme Mask, $3.99 at drugstore.com: I'm in love with this mask. I've been using it for about three weeks, and it's made a serious difference in my skin's look and texture.


There's really not much I can say about it. It's very straight forward. It's less than $4 for a big tube, which is a ridiculously awesome price for a naturally exfoliating mask. It uses pineapple enzymes to eat away at layers of dead skin on your face, so when you're removing the mask you're removing all those dull layers of skin. It smells just like a perfectly ripe pineapple, which of course I love, but the smell isn't overwhelming and doesn't linger long after the mask washes off. The texture is really nice, thick enough not to skin but thin enough to be easy to spread. It is a little grainy, but not so much to actually be exfoliating (which is a little annoying, but I'm willing to overlook it). What I do is squeeze out a quarter-sized dollop of the mask, spread it over dry, clean skin--staying far away from my eyes, and leave it on for 20-30 minutes (much longer than the recommended 5). I honestly couldn't feel any sort of tingling or burning when I applied this the first time, so I assumed it was a gentler exfoliator and left it on extra long. It's worked for me so far, so I'm going to keep doing it. The results I get from this mask are worth way more than $4. My skin takes a serious beating in the summer. The combination of dry L.A. heat, tons and tons of sunscreen, sweat, and dust all together usually completely clogs my pores by the end of August, but because of this mask my skin looks better than ever. It helps fade acne scars because it's taking off those top layers of skin, and it helps unclog pores at the same time, and it does all of that without drying out or irritating my skin. I'm going to have to look into Freeman now. I'm a total convert.

The Feminine Mystique

So I've been shopping for college (still, I know), and one of the things that's been on my 'to buy' list forever is a pair of ballet flats. Since the only pairs of shoes I owned were 2 pairs of Uggs and about 6 pairs of sandals, I wanted a nice little pair of closed toe flats. But I kept putting it off and putting it off and I still don't have a pair of ballet flats. Which got me to thinking, really, what's the point? Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against ballet flats and if someone handed me a pair of J. Crew's version I'd gladly take them. But to be honest, I don't think I'll ever really wear them much because I'm just not that feminine. In the stereotypical sense, at least. I'd take a menswear button-down and jeans over a frilly sundress any day. And that led to the question (I'm getting to the point, I promise), what is feminine? When I think of it, the first thing that pops into my head is pink and lace and sparkles and flowers and all sorts of girly, non-threatening stuff like that.

But wearing that wouldn't make me feel feminine at all. It would make me feel like a little girl playing dress up, not a (technically) adult woman. So that obviously isn't feminine, in my self at least. What I think a feminine outfit is an ensemble that makes you feel like a strong, confident woman, not like a precious little girl. It's sexy, but not skanky, it's bold, but refined, and it's chic, but modern. You need to take your own personal style, and then put that twist on it. Since my style is a little edgy/androgynous, I'd put together something like this:

Alexander Wang Fitted Combo Dress, $750 at shopbop.com, Diane von Furstenberg Hayworth Clutch, $450 at shopbop.com, Christian Louboutin Platform Pumps, $930 at saks.com: A LBD is definitely a classic, feminine staple. What makes this one more edgy and grown-up is the black tulle ruching over the nude body. It has the effect of sheer panelling without actually being sheer, so it's sexy without being too revealing, and the diagonal stripes that the ruching makes add a ton of visual interest. Now, when I think feminine I think strong, and nothing says strong to me like studs. I know studs and femininity don't really go together, but the chic grey on black color palette of this clutch and the nailhead size of the studs make a polished, if edgy statement with none of the in-your-face attitude you'd expect from a heavily studded piece. Pastels are always associated with girliness, so a pastel hued shoe is fitting, but when you spice them up with a red sole and a chain mail detail on the toe, they become all grown up. These are definitely girly shoes, but they're girly with an attitude, and that's the kind of feminine I'd rather be.


I'm going to sound so cliche right now, but I think being feminine, all stereotypical associations aside, is wearing what makes you feel self-confident and empowered. If you feel good about how you look and you feel comfortable in your own skin, then you're being feminine in the best sense of the word because you're being true to yourself as a woman. I'm going to go Dr. Laura another captive audience now.

Organix Anti-Break Serum and More Random Shopping

I promise, this isn't just another Megan online shops too much post, there's an actual review below.

Antik Batik Aleksa Dress, $317 at shopbop.com, Sauce Pearl Tee, $62 at shopbop.com, Catherine Rapetti Double Knots Love Bracelet, $95 at shopbop.com: I love the hippie chic vibe of this Antik Batik dress. I'd style it the same way, with '70s inspired boots. What keeps this dress from being stuck in the past in the sheer panelling on the sleeves, which keep it from being dowdy, the mini length, and the abstracted pattern on the bodice. The tie at the waist has the potential to be unflattering, but I think it adds an interesting blouson effect to the silhouette. I've never heard of Sauce, but I'm loving this tee. The asymmetrical hem detail adds visual interest when you leave it hanging out, but if you tuck it in it's just as versatile as a regular t-shirt. The fit is the perfect mix of sexy and drapey, and that loose pocket with the pearl/safety pin details is genius. It's just enough of a look to make this tee special, but not so much that you loose versatility because of it. I'm really into loose, wrapped bracelets right now, and this is a pretty chic option. The braided texture says hippie friendship bracelet, the lariat has a bit of a western vibe, and the black leather refines it all.


Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Break Serum, $6.99 at target.com: I have pretty healthy hair, but when you add in the wear and tear that comes from spending all day, every day outside in the sun, even the healthiest hair can start to take a beating. I wanted to add a serum into my routine for a little extra moisture on my dry ends and a little extra shine, and since I'm a cheapie, I started at Target. I've heard good things about the Organix line, so I just grabbed one of their serums and headed to the cash register. I mean, it was less than $7. How can it be bad?


Overall, I'm really pleased with it. It's no showstopper, but you get 4 ounces for $7, which is a really great price so I'm not complaining. It smells just like toasted coconut, which for me is a total plus, but might turn some people off because the smell is a little strong at first, but it does fade to a subtle tropical fragrance after a few minutes. The serum itself is pretty thick and a little oily (maybe it's all the coconut oil). One of the main ingredients is whipped egg whites, which kinda freaks me out, but there's nothing eggy about this serum. It adds a decent amount of shine to my hair, but I think it would do more in that department for really, really damaged hair, and it definitely makes my ends feel noticeably softer, which is really what I wanted. I apply a nickel sized amount of serum to towel-dried hair, rubbing it on my palms and then down the length of my hair starting from the top of my ears, and let my hair air dry. It does have a bunch of silicone in it, which I'm not a big fan of but it's hard to find a serum without it.

This isn't the kind of serum that's going to have strangers stopping you on the street and asking you how you do your hair. But it is a dependable workhorse of a product, something that's effective, adds softness, shine, and a lovely whiff of coconut, and that costs less than two trips to Starbucks. I'm not sure if I'll repurchase, but for the moment I'm very content to smell like a Hawaiian cocktail. I want to try the Coconut reparing mask next...

Inspired by: Shakira's She Wolf

Yes, it is as bad as it sounds. I have a weakness for crappy disco pop, especially of the European persuasion. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's on par with the Beatles or anything quality wise, but it's entertaining and it wakes me up in the morning. My latest obsession is Shakira's new single, She Wolf (I know, I know). The song is entertaining, and the music video is really, really stupid. But it does feature a particularly gorgeous grey smokey eye that I attempted to screen-cap below.

Of course I had to try to recreate that immediately (I mean, it's grey AND smokey. I die). The idea is to have warm, taupey greys blended into the lashline, with a lighter taupe on the lid, graduating to a deep, warm grey right in the lash line. I started with Urban Decay's primer potion, $17 at sephora.com, all over the lid and on the lash line, followed by a light wash of MAC's Style Snob shadow, $14.50 at maccosmetics.com, across the lid. Then I used my Sephora Brand Rounded Crease Brush #13, $17 at sephora.com, to blend MAC's shadow in Wedge, $14.50 at maccosmetics.com, into the crease, and MAC's shadow in Femme Fi onto the browbone and the inner tearducts. Line the upper lash line and the lower lash line (lightly), with any dark neutral liner (I used MAC's Pearlglide Liner in Molasses, $14.50 at maccosmetics.com). I used my Sephora Brand Smudge Brush #14, $13 at sephora.com, to blend Benefit's Creaseless Shadow/Liner in Skinny Jeans $19 at sephora.com, into the upper and lower lash lines. You want to blend a bit beyond the lash line (about halfway up the lid) and make sure it's a little smudgy. Then blend a dark, warm grey shadow like the dark half of L'Oreal's HIP Metallic Shadow Duo in Gilded, $7.99 at drugstore.com, tightly into both lash lines for extra definition. Top it off with a coat of Max Factor's Lash Perfection Volume Waterproof Couture Mascara, $7.79 at ulta.com (which I still love!).

Textured Tube Skirt, $138 at bcbg.com, ADAM Leather Jacket, $745 at shopbop.com, Make Pies Not War Luck of the Derby Necklace, $25 at etsy.com: And just because, I rounded up three more of the things I'm craving over right now. This BCBG skirt is such a great deal. It's basically a rip off of their own Herve Leger bandage skirts (obviously not as nice, but still). It looks like an Herve Leger mini, with the banded spandex, and the black shade makes it so versatile. Plus, all that spandex has to have some, ahem, slimming qualities. I love the collar on this ADAM jacket. It's so dramatic, and it has a vaguely aviator-esque vibe to it, which is totally on-trend. With the almost patent leather finish and quilting detail in the front, this is a serious investment piece. And how adorable is that horseshoe necklace? I actually have one like it, and I get more compliments on it than on any other piece of jewelry I have. It's only $25, and it's really petite, which just makes it even more elegant and feminine.

More Random Craveability

I've realized that I do lots of these shopping round-ups/things I want posts, and that they're probably kind of annoying to well, everyone aside from me, but there is a method to the madness. I troll La Garconne/Shopbop/Net-a-porter/etc, etc. everyday for stuff I like, and then I organized it in posts like these, so that whenever I need to go shopping I already have a stockpile of stuff I like. It's generally not realistic stuff, but it helps guide my shopping expeditions. So, I guess you could think of these posts as a little window in the total forgetful chaos that is my brain (and yes, clothes are the only thing I think about. For serious).

Phillip Lim Handkerchief Neckline Dress, $675 at lagarconne.com, Phillip Lim Magnified Rhinestone Print Dress, $225 at lagarconne.com, Boy By Band Of Outsiders Oversized V-neck Sweater, $329 at lagarconne.com: This Phillip Lim dress intrigues me. It's got a casually chic, almost French girl vibe that I'm loving. The shape is very classic and very chic, with the 3/4 length sleeves and cinched waist, but the fun pattern and ruffle detail at the neckline keep it young and modern. This is one of those pieces that is an outfit in itself, no accessories required, and would work just as well in summer as it would in winter or fall (i.e. even though it's not cheap, the cost per wear would be pretty low). This next dress is the total opposite. It's trendy, impractical, and mildly vulgar. And I still really like it. There's something really appealing about a luxe, in your face print on a plain white t-shirt, and I'm always looking for contrast/tension when I'm putting together an outfit. The first time I saw this sweater I was like, "meh, another boyfriend pullover, pass," but I accidentally clicked on the detail pics, and saw something very interesting. They styled it backwards on the model, with the v-neck in the back. It changes the mood of the entire sweater. It looks like an assumming pullover from the front, albeit with chic green/navy stripes, but from the back it has serious sex appeal.


Iosselliani Feather Ring with Strass, $147 at lagarconne.com, Gara Danielle Love Ring, $144 at shopbop.com, A.L.C. Twisty T Dress, $250 at shopbop.com: You guys know I'm a sucker for Iosselliani and their gothic rockstar aesthetic. I love the organic nature of the feather on the ring against the cold, hard brilliance of the stone, and the cheeky way that they put the feather over the stone itself. It's hard to tell on the second ring, but from the front it reads "Love" in twisty, artistic letters. I like it because it has a sweet, sentimental message, but with the twisting, organic feel of the letters it's not saccharine or cheesy at all. And here's another example of the asymmetrical mini dress, courtesy of A.L.C. It has the vibe of an Alexander Wang piece, with the jersey fabric, long sleeves, and uneven ruching, but it costs about $400 less. It also comes in black (which I like better but it was harder to see the detail on), if you really want to go all out sex kitten.


Leyendecker Isanti Top, $158 at shopbop.com, Madewell Leather Biker Jacket, $495 at shopbop.com, BE & D Garbo Tote with Gold Hardware, $1,490 at shopbop.com: I can't decide if I like this top better in black or white. I want both. The cutout detail at the shoulders is so sexy, but not at all revealing, the drapey pocket on the chest reminds me of Kain (always a plus), it's the perfect length, and it's just such a chic, modern version of a basic t-shirt. I fall for a new motorcycle jacket every week. Having loved about 50 so far, what I like about this one is that it's in a different shade, a mushroomy taupe, that's still a wearable neutral, but shows off the jacket's detailing better than black or dark grey would, and that the cut is perfect, with the wide collar and slim body. And you guys know that I'm hyperventilating over this bag. It's grey, it has two kinds of studs, and it''s a big, slouchy tote. I mean, come on. If it wasn't almost $1500, it would be on my shoulder this very second.

Press Tour Round-up: Sienna, Angelina, and Diane

I'm bored, so I decided to round-up a bunch of the press tour pics that I've been dying over lately. I mean, when you've got Sienna Miller, Angelina Jolie, and Diane Kruger all hitting the red carpet multiple times, you know you're in for some squeal-inducing, wallet shrinking awesomeness.

I'm kind of torn about Sienna Miller as a person and an actress, but I have to admit she does have serious style chops (and Twenty8Twelve is pretty badass). There were some definite misses on her G.I. Joe press tour, but I'm in a generous mood today, so I'm posting all my favorites. Yes, those pleated trousers aren't the world's most flattering pair of pants, but I really like the overall silhouette of the outfit, I'm pretty sure that's a Kain tank (automatic brownie points from me), and I love that awkwardly long and skinny scarf. It punches up the ensemble even though it's in a neutral palette. Even though that DVF dress in the middle makes Sienna look a little twee and mildly Rainbow Bright-tastic, I think it's really cute. The juxtaposition of the loose hair and the structured dress has a nice tension, the print is uniquely graphic and slightly '80s inspired, and I like the hem detail. I just wish she'd skipped the tights. They make her look even younger. This last outfit is my hands down favorite (even though she's def doing the Jennifer Aniston blow-out). The draping in the middle against the clean lines of the dress is lovely, and the bottle green cheetah/snake print? Delicious. And I even like the booties.


So it's a little old for her, but I like the idea of this floral dress. The tiny print and all those ruffles should be completely chaotic together, but in a light fabric they totally work. I like how the simple accessories keep the focus on the dress, and I love that Derek Lam bag. Now, when I heard that Angelina Jolie wore a black leather dress to the Inglorious Bastards premiere, I started screaming "FAIL" before the end of that sentence. I mean, Angelina is badass. Putting her in black leather is like making January Jones walk around in Marcel curls and hourglass dresses off-set. It's overkill. But somehow Angelina Jolie is pulling this off without making me want to vomit. I think it's the fact that her new, lighter locks open up her face perfectly, that she's wearing minimal makeup, and that the dress, while being made out of a hardcore material, has a decidedly classy cut with some lovely detailing. I mean, let's be honest, she still looks like a rockstar, but she looks classy at the same time (while doing a rock on hand gesture, no less). And just look at those shoes. Girl has style.


I like Diane Kruger. She has dubious taste in films, but she seems like a nice person to hang out with, and she has an adorable boyfriend and great taste in clothes (and she stepped on me at Dylan's Candy Bar in NYC when I was 12. I just had to throw that in there). From the front, I love this furry little dress. Yes, it's odd, and in any other cut it wouldn't work, but the minimalistic, classic lines of the dress counter the crazy, shiny, multi-color, tactile fabric perfectly. But from the back...it looks challenging, to say the least. How did she move without exposing her lady bits to the entire Perez Hilton reading world? Plus, I feel like that eyegrabbing back detail plus the insanity of that fabric is too much. If the dress was a simpler fabric or had a plain back, this would have been genius. At least she kept the hair and makeup to a minimum, and I love those shoes. This last look is much better. I mean, first of all, I have to give her props for pulling of that shade of nude. It's extremely, extremely nude! I'm 90% sure that dress is Herve Leger. but I like that the skirt has a soft a-line instead of their usual skintight cut. If it was entirely fitted it would have been too much skin with the nude. The subtle shimmer from the embellishment elevates the look, and I love how she glammed it up with the hair and makeup.


And I just had to post this shot from an upcoming Elle spread because Leighton Meester is rocking that black lipstick like I've never seen. It looks good on her, and I never thought I'd say that about black lipstick ever. I know those are extensions, but her hair is looking pretty covetable too. And don't even get me started on Ed Westwick.

Miracle Max

Well I don't know if these products are quite that powerful, but they do a pretty great job nonetheless. The next best thing of course would be to have Billy Crystal be the spokesperson for this line, but now I'm on a wee tangent... I actually was wondering recently why I haven't posted on this before as I've been using the second product for a few months now. ANYWAYS. I know some of you have probably heard of Mario Badescu, others maybe not so much, but they are actually a pretty respected skin care line that's been around for quite some time. It boasts celeb clientele and understandably, because, you know, it works. And for people who's skin is under a significant amount of stress all the time, I'm thinking that's a strong recommendation. So a while back I took the plunge (Then it was only available from their store in New York or on their website online. Now they seem to be expanding and you can find their products in some small beauty stores and Ulta.) and have been happy ever since. The line of products has a massive range and treats all skin types and all ages. So no matter if you're old or young, have sensitive or oily skin, you are set. The first product is their most popular one and I have to say, it works. The second is one I have kind of ever so slightly fallen in love with, I'll tell you why below.

Special Cleansing Lotion "O", $15 for 8 oz., $26 for 16 oz., and $45 for 32 oz. at http://www.mariobadescu.com/special-cleansing-lotion-o. The Drying Lotion is actually decently famous and I'll tell you why. It may come in a tiny bottle (1 oz.) but this puppy is going to last you a long time. Some people say it lasts them more than a year. Basically what you do is you stick a quetip in (don't shake it before!) and dab the little pink potion on whatever spots need healing. Leave it on overnight and presto! A product that actually works overnight like it promises. Really. Even some unruly buggers have met their match with this puppy. The site says you can also use it with mosquito bites and razor bums. Multipurpose too? Yes, please. The Special Cleansing Lotion "O" is why I started using this line. I have some weird skin condition on my arms and chest that has never really been properly diagnosed, by multiple doctors, and is irritating.It doesn't hurt or itch or anything, it's just unsightly. Especially when random people comment on your arms when you wear sleeveless shirts. But now I fear not. I read about this product and did some research and I'm glad I did. It's technical purpose is for body acne, but it also does a good job with other skin ailments, like ingrown hairs and such. Just wipe it on with a cotton pad after you shower daily.

Random Prettiness.

Sorry for the short post today, but I'm packing for a trip, but I'll have lots of time to post while I'm on my trip. Confusing, I know. Humor me. To tide you over until them, I rounded up a few bits of pretty for you all.

Blooming Hot Pink, $36 at truebirds.com, Charming Escape, $28 at truebirds.com, Black Charm, $16 at truebirds.com: True Birds is a line of headbands/hair accessories that's Gossip Girl with a hippietastic twist at totally affordable prices. I love the drama of that giant pink flower. It works perfectly with the minimalist black band, and would totally punch up a neutral outfit or little white sundress. If you're like Maud and you're into the feathers, this clip is for you. The grey-on-grey color palette is subdued and the shape is compact, but the textural contrasts between the feathers and the stones are so luxurious. Plus it's got a bit of a retro vibe with none of the usual hipsterness of feather hair accessories. For simple chic, I like this stretchy, bejeweled headband. Since the band is so thin, it's a very girly, elegant accent, but the added sparkles make it anything but boring. And since the sparkles are only on the top, they'll peek through at the crown of your head so adorably. If that makes any sense at all.


Super Sunglasses Havana Glitter Sunglasses $161 at shopbop.com, Parker Snake Cami Dress, $187 at shopbop.com: I love my Wayfarers, but sometimes I wish they were bigger. I'm definitely an oversized sunglasses kind of girl. These are like oversized Wayfarers. It doesn't get better than that. And evidently they're sparkly too? I mean, really, I should just sign over my bank account to shopbop.com now and save myself the trouble. I love the cute on this slip dress, with the blouson top and cinched waist. It's the right balance between sexy and carefree, and the awesome snakeskin print is just the cherry on top.

American Apparel Haul

Remember this? How I waxed poetic about a certain one-shouldered American Apparel dress? Well, guess what. I bought it. And so did Maud. We like to match. Not really. Anyways, we went to American Apparel, and I ended up getting the one shouldered dress in black, and Maud got it in tealish grey. I realllllllly like this dress. It has the asymmetrical, rock and roll vibe that I wanted, but at the same time it's a classic LBD (black OR blue). And see how it can look very different on different people? For the record, I'm on the left wearing the Medium/Large. I'm no Twiggy, but um, this definitely runs small. It's $42 at americanapparelstore.com. Keep in mind, it's not structured or lined, it's just stretchy cotton. So certain...lines may show.

Maudie also got this Sweetheart Two-Toned Mini Dress, $46 at americanapparelstore.com. It's a little hard to see, but it's sheer on top and in the back, so you get a little bra detail/peekaboo effect. It's actually really cut, and has a definite Alexander Wang vibe. Last but not least, I got this Melange Jersey Pocket Skirt in Heather Grey, $30 at americanapparelstore.com. I know you can barely see it in the picture, but I just wanted another easy, basic skirt. I paired it with my Alexander Wang for Gap coat, a Victoria's Secret Pink tank, a Coach belt, and my Steve Madden Luxe Pumps, and I think it's really cute. Grey is quite possibly my favorite color.
