Update: LUSH New! Solid Shampoo

Alright y'all, I've been using this LUSH New! shampoo for just over a month now, and I though I'd do a little update on how it's been going.

LUSH New! Shampoo is $9.95 at lushusa.com.  So this little hockey puck has shrunk to about half its size.  Doesn't it look awkward?  It would be significantly larger if I wasn't a complete space case and didn't leave it out in a running shower for it to dissolve away down the drain.  Boo.  So factoring that in, I'd say that this bar could last you between 3 and 4 months, depending on how much hair you have and how well you store it.  Storage is a bit of a problem.  After you use it, it's wet.  But if you leave it on a porous surface, that surface will absorb some of the product.  You have to leave it on a hard surface for it to completely dry out before you store it.

As for how the shampoo is actually doing, um, I LOVE IT.  I've never had strong feelings about shampoo.  It's just always kind of meh, gets the job done without being all that interesting.  Well, this shampoo may just be my soul mate.  I can even forgive the Big Red cinnamon smell, which doesn't linger on my hair at all.  With all other shampoos I've used, they've made my hair color fade and either not removed all of my buildup and left my hair greasy at the end of the day, or totally dried my hair out.  New manages to remove any product buildup, keep my hair clean all day, and make it soft and happy, not fried or unhappy at all.  This picture was taken at the end of a hot day about a month and a week after I dyed my hair last.  My hair color hasn't faded, and my hair looks so clean and happy!  Just look how nice and shiny it is.

So, the verdict:  New! isn't cheap.  But a bottle of $4/$5 shampoo usually lasts me a month, and so I think that New may end up being cheaper in the end, and it makes my hair look better, AND it's totally airplane safe.  I think this one's a winner, ladies.

Flea Markets and Boots.

I know I promised outfits awhile ago, and I'm finally delivering! I know, I know, I'm slow.

So I got my boots, and OMG, these boots. This color's sold out on the Frye website at the moment, and I can't seem to find it anywhere else...sad face. But I love these boots to death. You can just tell that they're really well-made. The leather is so rich and supple, but also strong enough to stand up by itself and not get all slouchy. They actually seem pretty durable--I'm really clumsy and clunk around, but these don't have any scratches on them. They're super comfy, and seem to run true to size, but the calf is a little on the narrow side. It's 14 inches around, and my calves are 13 inches, and I wouldn't want the calves any smaller. These hit a couple inches below my knees, but I'm 5'8' and have longish legs, so they'd probably be knee length on a lot of people. I love the riding/cowboy boot details, the slightly upturned toe, the dip in the cuff, the pull-on straps (which are just for looks because these are really easy to get on). I'm seriously over the moon happy about these, I haven't taken them off, and I highly recommend them to everybody.

Here are two ensembles I've worn recently that revolve around the boots. The lighting sucks, but the first one is a Forever 21 tee (that necklace detail is made out of forks. hehe), a H&M belt, American Apparel skirt, and the boots. The second outfit is a Love Quotes scarf, American Apparel v-neck and skirt, H&M belt, Target tights, C&C California cardigan, and boots. The boots work so many different ways!

On an unrelated note, there's a fab flea market in LA once a month: the Rosebowl Flea Market. I dragged my mom out there with me yesterday, and I picked up a few things. This necklace has a serious Marie Antoinette vibe, with the fleur-de-lis and the ornate gold detailing. You guys know I'm a sucker for anything Marie Antoinette related, so I plan on wearing this ALL the time. I also got this scarf ($4!) from India. How cute is that festive lotus print? There's something so exuberant and yet so calm and refined about it at the same time. It'll be a breath of spring sunshine when I go back to Boston next week.

So while I'm talking about flea markets, I thought I'd give you guys a few pointers about shopping there if you haven't before. Flea markets can be full of fantastic vintage pieces, but they can also be crazy and overwhelming and full of junk. Personally, I think it's easier to go in with at least an inkling of what you're looking for. Even if you aren't looking for a specific piece, here are a few flea market guidelines:

-Flea markets are a great place to buy sweaters and tops. Sweaters and tops have very few measurements involved in getting them to fit correctly, so they're easier to buy without trying on. I know it sounds weird, but I've seen so, so many thick, old school cashmere sweaters for less than $50 at flea markets. I got a grey, Saks brand, made in Scotland cashmere sweater that's so thick I can wear it and a tee in 30 degree weather and be hot (I've honestly never felt a cashmere sweater that thick, it's very old school), in a men's small, so it has a bit of a boyfriend vibe to it, for $18. EIGHTEEN DOLLARS. You can't even get a cashmere sweater at Walmart for that price.
-Flea markets are not a good place to buy pants. Pants have so, so many different measurements and even shopping in stores it's hard to find a pair of pants that fits perfectly. You usually can't try clothes on at a flea market, so unless you're willing to spend a lot of money with a tailor, don't buy pants at a flea market. Skirts are easier, simply because there are less measurements involved. I found a vintage Chanel skirt for $2.50 at a flea market. But even with skirts, make friends with a tailor.
-Flea markets have tons of great accessories, especially scarves and jewelry. You can get fantastic scarves at flea markets for less than $5, and scarves are a great way to jazz up a basic outfit. If you're not set on real gold jewelry with real gems, flea markets are full of antique and costume jewelry that's insanely affordable. And prices are often negotiable, especially at the end of the day. Also, vintage sunglasses are all over the place at flea markets, and a lot of the time these are actually authentic. I had a fab pair of vintage Dior frames that I loved to death...until I lost them. :(
-But flea markets have lots of fake designer bags. A lot of the time you look at a vintage bag and assume that since it's vintage, it must be authentic. Not always true. I'd say 95% of the designer bags at flea markets are fake, so just know that going in.

Markus Lupfer Hello Sailer mini T-shirt Dress, $170 at net-a-porter.com, OPI Mad as a Hatter, $8.50 at thebeautyclutch.com, Stila Smudge Pot in Kitten, $20 at sephora.com. I'll admit, this shirt is insanely cheesy. But I also find it totally hilarious at the same time. I think if you could wear this with a sense of humor and style it with streamlined, edgier pieces that it could totally work and not be over the top. I think you guys know how much I love Alice in Wonderland, so I'm predictably crazy about OPI's new Alice-themed polish collection, especially this polish, Mad as a Hatter. It's a clear base with a TON of round, rainbow colored glitter. It just looks so happy! Since the sparkles are so small it's not overwhelming or cheesy, just unapologetically fun. So last week I picked up the four mini Stila smudge pots, and so far I've tried Starry Night, the navy with shimmer, and Kitten, this sparkling champagne nude. The navy was less than awesome. The color looks so vibrant in the pot, but on my eyes it seemed dull and lifeless. It look a lot of product to get an sort of definitive line (poor pigmentation) and it seemed to drag, making it hard to get a clear line. Kitten, on the other hand, is fabulous. It's my new favorite base shadow. It's shimmery and light, doesn't add too much color to my eye, doesn't smudge or smear, and really lasts all day. This smudge pot is actually really pigmented, so you only need a tiny bit to cover the entire lid. I've officially converted to the Kitten worship.

Gift Guide #5: Under $25

I promised I'd round up a few more affordable presents, and I didn't forget guys, I swear! When you have to buy presents for a lot of friends and family, $25 is a pretty reasonable amount set down each present (or even less if you're super thrifty), but just because it's cheap doesn't mean it can't still be luxurious. Here are 12 lovely, under $25 gifts (and yes, they're mostly beauty related, I'll admit that right now).

Korres Rose Collection, $19.50 at sephora.com, Korres Lip Butter, $9 at sephora.com, Philosophy The Gingerbread Man Foaming Bubble Bath and Shower Gel, $16 sephora.com: This Korres Rose Collection has a Rose Body Butter, Rose Showergel, and Wild Rose Lip Butter, which is a pretty good deal for $19.50, especially considering that the lip butter is $9 on its own. I love Korres because it's eco friendly but still effective, has adorable packaging, and products that smell amazing. Although the combo set would make a great present, the lip butter on its own is a fab gift. I like this lip butter even more than MAC's lip conditioner. It has a lovely flush of color (and comes in a wide range of tints), is long lasting, and actually moisturizes. These Philosophy shower gel/shampoo combinations are a really good deal. They're 16 oz., which is huge, and come in a really wide variety of smells/flavors. My personal favorite, Pumpkin Spice Muffin, seems to have disappeared, but Gingerbread Man is another holiday option, and there's also Red Velvet Cake, Cherry on Top, Caramel Apple, and a ton more.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Nail Polish in Black Russian, $18 at rescuebeauty.com, OPI Nail Polish in Russian Navy, $5.45 at amazon.com, Stila Smudge Pot, $20 at sephora.com: Nail polish makes an amazing stocking stuffer, especially in fun, on-trend colors. OPI and Essie will run you about $8 a bottle, so you could afford to get 3 bottles for less th an $25, and Rescue Beauty Lounge is a bit more expensive, but the healthy formula and interesting range of shades is well worth the price. I love Rescue Beauty Lounge's Black Russian (pictured), which is a black base with a ton of red glitter, Scrangie, purple with iridescent green and blue shimmer, and Locavore, which is a clear base with gold, silver, green, and blue glitter. OPI has an entire rainbow of shades, and right now I'm loving Russian Navy (pictured), which is a deep navy faint reddish shimmer, and Cajun Shrimp, which is a warm, poppy orange-red. As much as I love Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliners, Stila's Smudge Pots are a little bigger for a little less money. I'm assuming that the gift recipient already has a suitable eyeliner brush (although if they're mad-skilled enough to use gel eyeliner they probably would). I like the black for a good old cat-eye, the bronze for a warm, summer look, the cobalt for a flattering flash of color, and kitten as an eyeshadow base.

Burt's Bees Head to Toe Starter Kit, $15 at burtsbees.com, Shu Uemura 24k Gold Eyelash Curler, $24 at sephora.com, Madewell Chandelier Drop Earrings, $25 at shopbop.com: These Burt's Bees starter kits are so, so adorable and really handy. This one has mini versions of the pomegranate lip balm, peppermint foot lotion, milk & honey lotion, deep cleansing cream, grapefruit & sugar beet shampoo and conditioner, lemon butter cuticle cream, hand salve, radiance creme, and the naturally nourishing body wash. Which is a pretty darn good idea for $25. This would be a great gift for someone who loves Burt's Bees but doesn't know that much about their products and wants to be able to try literally everything. Plus, Burt's Bees is so eco friendly and uses mostly natural ingredients, so their products work for even the most sensitive of skin. This Shu Uemura eyelash curler is so perfect. Not only is it basically the king (or queen) of eyelash curlers, but it's gold, which is so glam and holiday festive, and it comes in that super cute little box. Any beauty aficionado would be thrilled to find this in their stocking. I LOVE these earrings. They look like they cost a heck of a lot more than $25 (anyone would be fooled), and their combination of the classic chandelier shape with the modern faux gem and chains is very on-trend chic. The way the sheen of the polished stone would peek out from your hair or twinkle next to an updo is a bit of unexpected glam from the industrial materials.

J. Crew Tissue Boyfriend V-Neck Tee, $24.50 at jcrew.com, Victoria's Secret Boyfriend Pant, $25 at victoriassecret.com, Anthropologie Monogrammed Mugs, $6 at anthropologie.com: I know these tees look a little boring and basic, but they are literally my favorite v-necks of all time. I'm collecting them. The fit is the perfect mix of slightly oversized and boyish and coquettish with the deep v-neck. They come in a whole range of shades (I particularly love the buff pink, which is the perfect warm, off-white shade). They're on sale, so snatch them up while you can. Victoria's Secret sweats don't exactly scream glam, but a cute pair of sweats is an essential in any girl's wardrobe. I'm not saying you have to wear them in public, but who wants to curl up and watch a movie at home in jeans and heels? Not me. But at the same time, you don't need to sacrifice a little bit of style for comfort. These sweats come in a lot colors with cute patterns, are seriously affordable, and I love the 'I stole these from my boyfriend' fit. These cups are the perfect thing to get for all your friends. The cups themselves have an adorable, oversized teacup feel, and the swirly monograms on the front give them a little something special. I have one, I've given a couple to friends (Holly!) and these are always a big hit.

Gift Guide #4: Boho Gypsy

I'm back! And still alive. For the most part. It's 27 degrees in Boston right now. So. Not in a happy place. But the show must go on, so here's my next gift guide. This is for your hippie dippie friend. Not a smothered in patchouli reads Tarot cards hippie dippie, but Nicole Richie-inspired, beachy chic, travel obsessed, Lauren Hutton loving a hippie who layers fantastic jewelry, sports a bronzey glow, and loves bright colors and breezy fabrics.

House of Harlow Gold Plated Hoop Earring with Black Enamel, $40 at singer22.com, Lucky Necklace in Gold, $99 at shoprosenasammi.com, Erica Weiner Milagro Heart Necklace, $45 at ericaweiner.com: Crazy coincidence: Nicole Richie designed these earrings. I may have planned that lead-in. I love gold jewelry for this look because as much as I love (and generally only wear) silver, gold is a much warmer metal that fits the boho personality perfectly. These earrings have a bit of a quirky, I found these at a foreign flea market vibe, and giant gold hoops always reminds me of Esmeralda (yes, the Disney character), which is the ultimate gypsy reference. This necklace says lucky in Sanskrit, although you can get necklaces that say a wide variety of things from this site--including fierce, my personal favorite. You could pick a word that's really personal for whoever's getting it. So cute! The fact that it's in Sanskrit gives it a worldly cache, and the organic swirls of the letters feel so earthy. Since it's really small it's not too much of a statement, and could be easily layered with other necklaces, like this Milagro necklace. Milagros are South American tokens offered to a saint for a particular need (in this case, mending a broken heart), and even if you aren't religious they have a sweet, nostalgic vibe. I really like the simplicity and crudeness of the charms in contrast with their luxe gold plating, and they're so delicate that you could wear them everyday!

Lizzie Fortunato Jewels Small Fortune Navajo Braid Bracelet, $110 at shopbop.com, Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent Frisco Whipstitch Flat Sandals, $250 at shopbop.com, Rebecca Minkoff Suede Lovenote Clutch in Grey, $298 at singer22.com: The mix of textures in this bracelet feels so classically flea market, but in a very chic way, obviously. The tassel has a bit of a Mediterranean feeling, the braided metal gives it a bit of a modern edge, and the jade beads remind me of those bracelets we all used to collect in middle school (with all the jade/colored stone beads? Anyone else?). Plus, you guys know I'm a huge fan of any drapey bracelet. There's something so casually sexy about them. These shoes make me so happy. First off, the braided, woven texture is so classically boho, the lapis blue is both cheerful and versatile, and a flat sandals is like the staple hippie shoe. This is just an extremely polished incarnation. As much as I like those shoes, I like this clutch even more. It's not all that hippie-tastic, but I think the long, tassel-esque zipper pulls have a bit of a boho feel, and the grey suede fabric and angled zipper placements add a really nice, urban edge. You could take this clutch so many places, with so many outfits (hello, low cost per wear).

Virginia Johnson Shark-print Merino Wool Scarf, $194 at net-a-porter.com, Jen's Pirate Booty Senorita Dress in Aquamarine, $115 at singer22.com, Anthropologie Ikat Bowl, $14 at anthropologie.com: This scarf is so, so cute. One, it's bright pink, and two, it has sharks all over it, which is so hippietastic it makes want to...wear patchouli? Well, almost. Now, I'm not a personal fan of sharks, but even I have to think they're pretty adorable when miniaturized and put on a woolly scarf. The color and the print make it a bit of a novelty item, but I think you could actually get a lot of wear out of this. It's a statement piece that you could use to dress up any basic outfit. I mean, throw on a pair of jeans and a Hanes tee to go to Starbucks and look cute, toss this on top and look totally pulled-together. This dress might be stretching it a little bit, but it's too sweet to pass up. The aquamarine hue is so refreshing and beachy--speaking of beachy, this would be a great swimsuit cover-up. The off-the-shoulder cut is really sexy in a very '70s inspired way, and the ribbon pulled through at the hem has a really quaint, hand-made vibe. And when the brand name is Jen's Pirate Booty, how can you resist? Really. This bowl may seem random, but I've had a love affair with it for such a long time. The ikat print is so Babe Paley (the quintessential bohemian goddess), and it's such a fun thing to put on a bowl. How fun would it be to eat your morning cereal in this? It's pieces like this that add a fantastic, worldy and yet pulled together vibe to a house. Plus, since it's affordable you could get your BFF a set! In multiple colors!

NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Kalahari, $32 at sephora.com, NARS The Multiple Coffret, $40 at sephora.com, Fresh Fig Apricot EDP, $75 for 3.4 oz. at sephora.com: I know the boho look doesn't exactly scream "makeup junkie," but soft bronzey shadows are a must. They add a glow to the face and can be used to softly contour the eye or smoked out for a little extra drama. I like this duo because it's NARS, so the shadows are highly pigmented and easy to blend, and although the colors don't really go together, I love both of them separately. The left shade is more on the golden/bronzey side for glam days, and the right shade is more of a metallic, milk chocolate for you're feeling low key. The other makeup essential for the bohemian chic look is radiant skin, and this NARS Multiple set is a such a handy way to achieve that. The Multiples are cream formulas that are supposed to work on the eyes, cheeks, and lips, and are highly blendable and easy to layer. This set has Orgasm (shimmery peachy pink), South Beach (shimmery apricot tan), and Copacabana (pearly white). I'd use Orgasm on the cheek as a blush, South Beach swept under the cheekbones and on the temples as a contour, and Copacabana on top of the cheekbones and on the browbone as a highlight. $40 is actually a really, really good deal for this many multiples (the full size versions are usually $45). Last but not least, there's this lovely Fresh perfume. The notes are Turkish apricot, peach skin (interesting), lychee, fig leaf, petitgrain, dandelion, green tea, musk, and marine notes. It's a mix of lush fruits, warm musks, and sweet, clean florals--warm, inviting, and a little exotic. Much more chic than a head shop mix of patchouli and sandalwood, and who can resist that Sake-esque bottle?

Craving, Coats, and Body-Con

This post is a little random. As in the only connecting theme is that I love everything in it. I think that counts.

Bodkin Andromeda Dress, $276 at lagarconne.com, Bodkin Love Dress, $310 at lagarconne.com, Bodkin Compressor Skirt, $276 at lagarconne.com: I like this Bodkin brand. They have this whole Star Trek-inspired femme fatale (am I the only one that thought the new Star Trek was kind fashion inspiring?) thing going on, and they use a lot of organic materials, which is always a plus. These three pieces hit on essential fall and spring trends. The first dress has some asymmetrical draping, dropped shoulders, and cut outs. I love the flash of skin at the shoulder--it's a very subtle way to do sexy. The second dress is the new take on a body-con mini. The geometric inlays and volume at the hips are very on trend, and it has an amazing futuristic, hot alien flight attendant vibe. All the flat detailing works perfectly with the neutral shade, and I love the convenient pockets. The skirt is the perfect high-waisted, body-con mini. First off, the price is definitely right, especially compared to Herve Leger. When compressor is in the name, you know it's going to have the same sucking in/flattering properties as the real deal, and there's a very faint geometric pattern that adds a ton of visual interest. Pair this with a drapey white tank and you are golden.

MAC Eye Kohl in Blooz, $14.50 at maccosmetics.com. I want navy eyeliner. I know it sounds random. But I really like navy. It's a really fun neutral. I usually go with brown or purple eyeliner, because purple plays up the green in my hazel eyes really nicely, and brown is a good option if black seems a little harsh. But navy...I think navy might really make my eyes pop. It's more of a shot of color than purple, it makes the whites of your eyes look really white by comparison, and it's still dark enough to give definition. Naturally, I turned to MAC first. They're reliable for more unexpected colors. I dug through all their navy liner options, and Makeup Alley is telling me that the Blooz Eye Kohl is the best. It's super-smudgeable, and it's the perfect shade of blue: vibrant, but not over the top. Do want.

So on my little TJ Max field trip this weekend, I also picked up this Miss Sixty coat. Miss Sixty isn't really a label I follow, but this coat was super-adorable and only $80. It's a hounds-toothy tweed that's black and grey with a few strands of pink woven in (to match the hot pink lining!). I'm in love with it. The cut is roomy, so I can layer underneath it, but it's fitted enough at the top that it's still flattering. It has big pockets, and the double-breasted buttons give it a bit of a peacoat vibe. I really like the overall '60s, ladylike feel of the coat. It's not something I would have thought to look for, but it's sweetly retro and I love me an Ally McBeal reference.

Burt's Bees and J. Crew

Going through my closet and packing, I've realized that I'm big on the voluminous top, fitted bottoms silhouette. I know I should already know stuff like that about myself, but I'm not very observant at all. For reals. I like it because I have decently thin legs and relatively curvy hips, so it's a comfy but flattering look. The only trick with it is that the bottoms need to be very clean and very fitted for this to work. I have the jeans portion down, but sometimes you need to show a bit of leg (especially when you have that end of summer tan!), and that calls for a chic, fitted short. Which isn't something you can pick up at Forever21. I'm trying to save my cash, so I've resisted selling out for a good pair of shorts for literally months. But...I finally caved. Shocker, I know. I wanted a nice, neutral color that wasn't navy, grey, or black, because so many of my tops are those colors that similarly colored shorts wouldn't work.

J. Crew 3" Chino Shorts, on sale for $29.50 at jcrew.com, American Apparel Tri-blend Light Weight Raglan Pullover, $36 at americanapparelstore.com, J. Crew Tissue Boyfriend V-neck Tee, $9.99 at jcrew.com: So I went with these J. Crew shorts in khaki. I used to passionately hate khaki (bad school uniform memories), but I realized that it looks good with white, navy, black, grey, and basically anything. I got the 3-inch inseam because it's short enough to balance out a slouchy tee, but not too short. I mean, $30 is pretty good for a pair of J. Crew shorts, and they're just so classic and chic and clean and adorable. If you can't tell, I'm in a happy place. The only thing is that they definitely run at least a size small. I want to wear them with my new grey American Apparel raglan, because it hits at the perfect place on the hip to go with a tailored short, and with my J. Crew boyfriend tee, for the perfect slightly menswear-inspired weekend look.

Valentino Studded Cage Sandals, $795 at neimanmarcus.com, Christian Louboutin Lolo Ballerina Pumps, $795 at neimanmarcus.com: And I just want both these shoes. Because they pretty. The Valentinos are the cheaper version of an Alaia pair that I can't find online, but they're still freaking awesome. I generally hate red, but somehow here with the shiny black studs and the big platforms the red is working for me. Don't get me wrong, these aren't staple, investment shoes. But they are HOT, and they would kill with a little grey dress (black and red is just too aggressive for me). I'm not sure if the ballerina toe on these heels would actually work in real life, but in my head it's amazing. You've got the sweetness of a ballet flat balanced by the sexiness of a platform and a stiletto heel--the perfect contrast.

Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Watermelon, $4.99 at drugstore.com: As part of my saving money kick, I'm trying to get away from the MAC Tendertones as my signature lip balms and towards a cheaper, but still awesome lip balm. I was wandering around Target and happened upon a rack of these, so I just grabbed Watermelon, a medium pink, and headed to the cash register. It's less than $5, how could it go that wrong?

Overall, I really like it. The minty scent and menthol feel aren't my favorite, but I can deal with them. The texture is very buttery and smooth, a mix between a lipstick and a Tendertone-esque lip balm. I like that it's a little firmer, because I feel like it stays on my lips longer and doesn't melt away. It's decently moisturizing, maybe a little less than my Tendertones but it's still doable. The thing I'm most intrigued by is the color. Watermelon has nothing to do with watermelons. It's a medium, slightly frosty, blue-based pink with a lot of shimmer. It gives my lips a hint of sheen and that baby-doll, pale pink hue that I love. The thin tube is easy to work with (and easier to lose), and the twist-up format seems to work pretty well. I'd give it a 7.5/10, which is pretty good for something that cost a third of the cost of my old Tendertones. I'm interested in trying other, possibly more natural looking shades, and at this price point, I can actually do it.
